Listed below are the VCE programs currently offered by SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium.

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn about the continuity of the animals on display. Students will explore the unique reproductive strategies employed by marine organisms and advantages and disadvantages of these methods. The information is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists breed and care for the aquarium’s collection. Key focuses include:

  • Simple Vs complex life cycles
  • Habitat use by marine organisms
  • Sexual Vs asexual reproduction
  • Seasons and rhythms

Note: Program includes guided tour of back of house area.

Take a breath! Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn how marine animals deliver oxygen to their bodies. Not just gills, students explore the wide variety of strategies actually used as well the various constraints of living in an underwater environment. The information is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists care for and monitor the aquarium’s collection. Students will also have the opportunity to view dissected fish gills and observe their structure. Key focuses include:

  • Animal survival and adaptation
  • The importance of respiration
  • Oxygen acquisition in extreme environment
  • Structure of fish gills through observation of a dissected specimen
  • Diffusion

Note: Program includes guided tour of back of house area.

Classification and Taxonomy - VCE (2017 update)

What is an Echinoderm? Are sharks and rays really related? And is coral an animal or plant? Students will be able to answer these questions plus more as they embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn about the taxonomy of the animals that live there.  Groups will discuss modern classification systems and be given the tools to identify and organize a variety of marine organisms into their relevant functional groups.Key focuses include:

  • Marine environments and habitats
  • The importance of classification
  • Taxonomy of living organisms
  • Etymology of names

Creating Environments - Click To Expand

Creating Environments - VCE (2017 update)

  • Biology Unit 1 – Area of Study 2: How do living systems sustain life.

In this program aligned to the 2017 VCE Biology Unit 1 outcomes students will tour the building, discover how we create environments at the aquarium and compare these to wild ecosystems. The group will discuss biotic and abiotic factors in captivity and the wild and the limiting factors that impact on what animals can survive. Students will discuss symbiosis, homeostasis and adaptations with the unique species that call the aquarium home. The group will also visit behind the scenes to view our life support systems and compare these to their real world equivalents.


Key focuses include:

  • Abiotic and biotic factors
  • Keystone species
  • Adaptations
  • Limiting factors
  • Symbiosis

Water Chemistry - VCE

  • Chemistry Unit 2 – Area of Study 1

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and discuss the most basic requirement of life for the animals that live there; Water! Educators will draw upon students’ basic understanding of H2O in order to discuss and demonstrate the practical, real world applications of knowledge thus far. This program includes a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists record, assess and balance the chemistry of their exhibits. Students also will consolidate their learning by completing a number of relevant, hands on water tests. Key focuses include:

  • pH and the science of acids and bases
  • The Nitrogen cycle
  • Saltwater Vs freshwater
  • Temperature and oxygen
  • Water testing

Marine Careers - Click To Expand

Marine Careers

Levels: Year 7 - Tertiary

Students will embark on a guided tour throughout SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium, and learn about the diverse range of career opportunities within our industry, from aquarists and educators, to events, PR and Guest Services. Students will also view a short presentation highlighting the varying pathways into the industry, including tertiary studies, training, and volunteer opportunities. This program also includes a back-of-house tour and additional hands-on activities with students given the opportunity to conduct water testing and enjoy a special animal encounter!

  • Behind-the-scenes of a working aquarium

Tourism

Depending on the purpose of your excursion, this program can be customised to focus on Customer Service, Marketing or Sustainable Tourism. Please advise us of your focus upon booking.

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn about one of Australia’s premier tourist attractions. Set within a business context, students will understand how this tourism facility incorporates state-of-the-art technology with a highly interactive, educational and entertaining experience. This program will feature a presentation by a SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium representative giving students the opportunity to gain first hand advice from experts in the tourism field.

Set within a business context, students will understand how SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium caters for the most intimate to extravagant event with creative flair and personalised service. This program will feature a presentation by our SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium Event Manager giving students the opportunity to gain first hand advice from an expert in the event management field.
