Melbourne Aquarium today announced an exciting new addition to its aquatic family – a spectacular Saltwater Crocodile named Pinjarra. One of the largest of its kind on display anywhere in the world, the jaw-dropping reptile will arrive this September when the attraction reveals the results of an $8M, 5-month complete overhaul and re-launches as SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium.
One of the World's Biggest Crocodiles
Measuring in at over 5 metres, the 50-year-old male Saltwater Crocodile casts a spectacular sight to behold, whose 750KG frame has been carefully considered during the creation of his home at Melbourne Aquarium – a state-of-the-art, purpose-built Croc Lair exhibit.
Paul Hamilton, Curator at Melbourne Aquarium says the Croc Lair exhibit will help the attraction to further educate the public on the ecological significance of the Saltwater Crocodile and the need for conservation.
“We are incredibly excited to work with Pinjarra given his immense size and unique personality, and eager to see this awe-inspiring creature in his new home at SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium.”
“In keeping with SEA LIFE’s strong ethical and environmental values BREED, RESCUE and PROTECT, caring for this spectacular animal will help us to raise public awareness and safety in natural crocodile habitats,” he said.
The Croc Team
In preparation for Pinjarra’s arrival, four dedicated staff from Melbourne Aquarium will attend “Croc College” in Queensland, where they will learn all the finer details involved in caring for the world’s largest and most feared predator.
The new state-of-the-art Croc Lair exhibit is just one of many new and exciting activities on offer to the public as part of the grand reopening of SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. When the attraction officially re-launches this September, visitors will be invited to go on a journey of discovery through 12 new amazing zones, encompassing interactive animal encounters, iconic state-of-the-art displays and hundreds of new species.
