Ocean Youth Update

Ocean Youth

06 Jul 2020 11:14:28

What has the Ocean Youth Team been up to?

Ocean Youth – Building tomorrow’s leaders and change makers to conserve and protect our oceans. Ocean Youth is all about gaining skills and implementing solutions to some of the big, hairy issues our oceans face and influencing others to do it too.

What have the Ocean Youth team been up to?

Ocean Youth Melbourne 2020 ambassadors have been involved in an online webinar series running throughout June and July. During these 1-hour sessions ambassadors have had opportunities to meet and hear from industry leaders, conservation ambassadors and Ocean warriors who have been getting out in the big old blue, doing research and protecting our beautiful marine ecosystems.

These sessions will replace Ocean Youth's onsite and face-to-face workshops and allow ambassadors to gather lots of knowledge before we swim out into our marine habitats later in the year when it is safe to do so again.

Recently Ocean Youth have heard from the inspiring Riley and Steve Hathaway the stars of NZ TV show "Young Ocean Explorers". Steve and Riley shared amazing stories of discovery in the oceans around NZ, including some amazing footage of Orcas! They also shared their experiences with conservation in their community and the importance of knowing your audience and of "Kids teaching kids". They shared stories from their "Live in Lockdown" series and the idea behind their innovative new 21 day challenge - all of which can be found on their website: https://www.youngoceanexplorers.com/

Quote from Steve Hathaway: "I believe this generation can make a difference if they are inspired by what's living under the surface"

Ocean Youth 2020 were also joined by the amazing Claire Jinnette from Phillip Island Nature Parks. Claire spoke to our 2020 ambassadors about the marine debris program she facilitates on the Island "Island wide along the tide" and about the power and importance of volunteers and the community in creating a healthier future for our local oceans and ecosystems.
