Lord Mayor Sally Capp to dive with the sharks for HeartKids!

Newly elected City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp will don a wetsuit and bravely dive with sharks at the iconic SEA LIFE Melbourne on Friday 8 June, to raise awareness of congenital heart disease.

The Lord Mayor will channel her inner superhero when she takes the plunge in support of HeartKids Super Boss Day.

“I am relishing the prospect of swimming with the sharks at SEA LIFE Melbourne for Super Boss Day,” the Lord Mayor said.

“I’m incredibly inspired by the work of HeartKids and feel confident that together we can ‘take the plunge’ to raise much needed funds for young people with heart disease.”

Congenital heart disease is the leading cause of death in babies under the age of one in Australia. Eight babies are born with congenital heart disease every day. It’s a lifelong condition with no known cure.

According to HeartKids CEO Mark Brooke, “Super Boss Day is a light-hearted way for organisations across Australia to show their support for babies and children with congenital heart disease and their families in this lifelong journey.”

Super Boss Day is raising the funds to roll out its new Family Coping program nationally, after a very successful pilot. The program delivers tailored therapy sessions to help families manage the significant emotional, financial and psychological challenges of living with congenital heart disease.

HeartKids is the only charity in Australia dedicated to supporting kids with congenital heart disease and their families, throughout life. It relies on community support to provide services, and to fund vital, life-changing medical research projects.

General Manager Sarah-Jane Tilbury said SEA LIFE Melbourne is thrilled to support HeartKids Super Boss Day by challenging some of Melbourne’s well-known bosses to take part in a shark dive.

“We hope the event, which also happens to fall on World Oceans Day, helps to raise funds for HeartKids and generates awareness of the work they do, as well the importance of protecting our oceans.”
