Listed below are the VCE programs currently offered by SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium.

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn about the continuity of the animals on display. Students will explore the unique reproductive strategies employed by marine organisms and advantages and disadvantages of these methods. The information is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists breed and care for the aquarium’s collection. Key focuses include:

 

  • Simple Vs complex life cycles
  • Habitat use by marine organisms
  • Sexual Vs asexual reproduction
  • Seasons and rhythms

Take a breath! Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn how marine animals deliver oxygen to their bodies. Not just gills, students explore the wide variety of strategies actually used as well the various constraints of living in an underwater environment. The information is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists care for and monitor the aquarium’s collection. Key focuses include:

 

  • Animal survival and adaptation
  • The importance of respiration
  • Oxygen acquisition in extreme environments
  • Diffusion

Classification and Taxonomy - VCE

  • Biology Unit 1 – Area of Study 2

 

What is an Echinoderm? Are sharks and rays really related? And is coral an animal or plant? Students will be able to answer these questions plus more as they embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn about the taxonomy of the animals that live there.  Groups will discuss modern classification systems and be given the tools to identify and organize a variety of marine organisms into their relevant functional groups. This information is supplemented with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists care for and monitor the aquarium’s collection. Key focuses include:

 

  • Marine environments and habitats
  • The importance of classification
  • Taxonomy of living organisms
  • Etymology of names

From the depths of the coral caves to the peaks of the Antarctic glacier, students will discuss the various biotic and abiotic factors that can make environments both habitable and inhabitable for the animals that live there.   • Chemistry Unit 2 – Area of Study 1

 

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and discuss the most basic requirement of life for the animals that live there; Water! Educators will draw upon students’ basic understanding of H2O in order to discuss and demonstrate the practical, real world applications of knowledge thus far. This experience is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists record, assess and balance the chemistry of their exhibits and will complete a number of relevant water tests themselves. Key focuses include:

 

  • pH and the science of acids and bases
  • The Nitrogen cycle
  • Saltwater Vs freshwater
  • Temperature and oxygen

Marine Careers

(Years 9 to 12)

 

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s 12 amazing themed zones and learn about the diverse range of marine related careers and the tertiary studies, training, and volunteer opportunities which lead to this pathway. This program will feature a presentation by a SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium Aquarist or Bird Keeper giving students the opportunity to gain first hand advice from experts in the marine field. The information is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how aquarists care for and monitor the aquarium’s collection.

 

A showbag containing relevant career information is provided.

Set within a business context, students will understand how this tourism facility incorporates state-of-the-art technology with a highly interactive, educational and entertaining experience. This program will feature a presentation by a SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium representative giving students the opportunity to gain first hand advice from experts in the tourism field.

This program will feature a presentation by our SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium Event Manager giving students the opportunity to gain first hand advice from an expert in the event management field.

  • Geography Unit 1, Area of Study 1 and 2

 

Students will embark on an underwater journey through SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium’s amazing themed zones and learn about the environments of the animals on display. Students will explore the range of geographical and coastal features and habitats represented in our displays, including the processes involved (both natural and human) that have shaped them. They will also examine why certain species live in different areas. The information is consolidated with a guided tour of the back of house facility where students will discover how the aquarium replicates natural environments in the exhibits and care for the aquarium’s collection.

  • Natural and human processes
  • Human impacts
  • Coastal management
