Melbourne Aquarium aquarists yesterday opened the water valve inside the brand new, state-of-the-art exhibit, Croc Lair, which signifies the final stages of the five-month refurbishment to become the all-new SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium in September.
As the beginnings of 117,000 litres of water jetted into the giant tank, the incredible new exhibit came to life and aquarists celebrated this final stage of construction ahead of being able to welcome its new resident Pinjarra – one of the world’s largest Saltwater crocodiles on display who will arrive in the coming weeks.
“Opening the water valve inside the Croc Lair exhibit is a significant moment for us at Melbourne Aquarium. A labour of love for five months, it marks the final chapter of the huge refurbishment program and the beginning of a new journey as Melbourne Aquarium becomes SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. We’re truly passionate about what the SEA LIFE stamp means for this iconic attraction and can’t wait to share the new and exciting experience with our visitors,” commented Paul Hamilton, Curator, Melbourne Aquarium.
The purpose-built, state-of-the art Croc Lair exhibit has been created to perfectly cater to the immense proportions of the 50 year old male Saltwater Crocodile, whose enormous 5 metre frame will cast a remarkable sight to behold for Melbourne Aquarium visitors. Themed to reflect the diverse landscape of the Northern Territory, the exhibit will feature a full 360 degrees viewing experience across three spectacular viewing levels that will give visitors a chance to come face-to-face with one of the most feared predators in the world.
